Opponent: Alcorn State (0-1, 17-17 in 2021)
All-Time: Wichita State leads 2-0 with a 82-63 win in 2021
When and Where: ESPN+, Charles Koch Arena, 3:02 PM tip
The Line: Unavailable – Presumably Wichita State at least -15
The Pick: Wichita State Moneyline
Isaac Brown’s Shockers will look to build on their solid 1-0 start with Alcorn State and a familiar face come into town on Saturday.
The Braves have former Shocker Trevin Wade, brother of Trey Wade, on the roster. Trevin Wade left Wichita following his brothers graduation last season. Wade’s role with the Braves remains to be seen, but he got solid minutes in their first contest.
Fred McNair’s Alcorn State squad improved tremendously last season, posting a .500 record and winning the SWAC regular season title for the first time in 20 years. They’re picked second in the conference this season.
Last season, the Shockers had a fairly easy time taking care of a Braves team that did not hit their stride until conference play. Alcorn State kept it close with Ole Miss on Monday, and with most of their core returning will be in much better form than last seasons contest.
Wanted: Shooting Guard
With Brown and his team still waiting to hear from the NCAA on the eligibility, Wichita State will need better play from their shooting guards to find success. Xavier Bell and Jaron Pierre did not shoot well against Central Arkansas – all 5 players must be involved for WSU. The duo of newcomers must look to get easy baskets early and stay involved in the offense for all 40 minutes.
Still Questions on the Glass
The Shockers still only out rebounded a smaller Central Arkansas squad by 5. Alcorn State struggled against Ole Miss being out rebounded 33-45. A good performance on the glass would go a long way in assuring coach Brown and the fans that the team has the hustle and intensity to battle down low.
How Improved is Alcorn?
The Braves always play a loaded non-conference schedule which can make it tough to find a rhythm. They played a good game at Ole Miss and have the confidence from a conference title last season. If Craig Porter and the Shockers don’t get off to an explosive start, they could find themselves trailing to the SWAC champions.
The Porter Show Continues
Craig Porter had a strong showing against Central Arkansas, running the offense while setting a career high in points in only 20 minutes. Wichita State will need to see more of that against Alcorn State and throughout the entire season.
